Green Climate Fund Project Targets One Million Beneficiaries, Boosts Jordan’s Water Supply
AMMAN — Jordan is expected to increase its annual water supply by around 9 million cubic meters, with cumulative gains projected to reach 163 million cubic meters over 25 years, under the Integrated Landscape Management Project. The initiative aims to strengthen water security and climate resilience for around one million people, including nearly 247,000 direct beneficiaries, by restoring 12,000 hectares of watersheds and ecosystems. Implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and national partners, the project is financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and focuses on the Yarmouk, King Talal Dam, and Kafrein basins.

With a total budget of $60.5 million, including $44.9 million from the Green Climate Fund, the eight-year project will establish a Water Fund to ensure long-term financing for water resource management. It will allocate $7.5 million to community-led projects, rehabilitate 10 springs, install 3,000 rainwater harvesting systems, construct groundwater recharge dams and earth barriers, and support 1,200 farming households with climate-smart agricultural technologies. Jordanian officials said the initiative reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to addressing climate change, improving water security, restoring ecosystems, and promoting sustainable rural livelihoods, while positioning Jordan as a regional leader in climate adaptation and integrated natural resource management.
