Anti-Corruption Court hands defendants hefty fines, prison term

AMMAN  — An anti-corruption court on Tuesday handed down a 22-year prison term against a businessman and ordered him to pay back JD542 million after he was found guilty of embezzlement and abuse of power. A second businessman in the same case was sentenced by the Anti-Corruption Criminal Court to 6 years in prison and to pay back an amount of JD78 million over the same charges. The first defendant, a former director of the Middle East Complex for Engineering, Electronics, and Heavy Industries, was sentenced in absentia while the second appeared in court. The case was originally investigated and referred to court by the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
