In two separate statements published on his Truth Social platform, Trump cited Mexico’s role in the flow of drugs into the United States and a trade imbalance with the EU as reasons for the decision.

Canada also received a similar notice from Trump, specifying 35% tariffs on its goods.

In response, the European Commission warned of the potential consequences of the U.S. tariffs and stressed that it would not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect the EU’s interests, including proportional countermeasures if the United States moves forward with the new tariffs.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in an official EU press release that the bloc has taken note of Trump’s letter outlining the revised tariff rates and timeline for implementation.

She warned that a 30% tariff on EU exports would disrupt vital transatlantic supply chains, harming businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.

Von der Leyen emphasized the EU’s commitment to fair trade practices and openness, adding that Brussels continues to prefer a negotiated solution with Washington in the spirit of dialogue, stability, and constructive transatlantic partnership.
