Al-Barmawi told Petra that the Cabinet had decided to extend the policy of providing direct cash support to bakeries and fixing bread prices for the current year, in order to maintain subsidies for this essential commodity and shield citizens from the burdens of rising global wheat and barley prices and their impact on bread production costs.

He pointed out that alleviating citizens’ financial burdens and subsidizing this strategic commodity remain among the government’s priorities and key objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision, by keeping bread prices stable despite the increase in global wheat prices.

He explained that the Ministry is implementing a well-structured, ongoing plan to maintain the strategic stock of wheat and barley at the highest safe levels, while increasing stored quantities within the Kingdom and securing supplies from various sources through contracts with suppliers.

He noted that Jordan’s wheat reserves are sufficient for 10 months of domestic consumption, while barley reserves cover 7 months. Additional tenders are continuously floated to purchase extra quantities to balance reserves with consumption needs.
