For his part, the Venezuelan foreign minister said that President Nicolás Maduro had issued a decision declaring a state of emergency in the country.
Sources reported hearing the sound of warplanes overhead and explosions, with columns of smoke rising over the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, adding that the explosions occurred in various parts of the city.
Venezuelan media also confirmed that the residence of the Venezuelan defense minister was hit in the Fuerte Tiuna military complex, with no information available about his fate.
Venezuela’s state news agency quoted a government statement rejecting what it described as a dangerous military aggression carried out by the U.S. government.
