Some states restored power during the day, reducing the number of affected customers from a peak of more than 950,000 earlier.
Among the hardest-hit utilities was Nashville Electric Service in Tennessee, where power was cut to about 185,000 customers out of a total of 463,455, as well as Entergy, which reported outages affecting more than 145,000 customers out of its 3.05 million customers across the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the storm as “historic” and approved a federal emergency declaration on Saturday in more than ten states, most of them in the mid-South.
