King phones Iraq PM, strongly condemns assassination attempt

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah, in a phone call on Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi, strongly condemned the assassination attempt on the prime minister, saying it aims to threaten the security and stability of Iraq.اضافة اعلان

King Abdullah reaffirmed that Jordan stands in full solidarity with Iraq and its people, in support of bolstering security and stability, and with the Iraqi government’s efforts to continue fighting terrorism.

His Majesty also lauded the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and peoples, expressing keenness to enhance cooperation across all fields, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Also on Sunday, Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh strongly condemned the failed terrorist attack targeting his Iraqi counterpart.

During a cabinet session, the prime minister rejected the act, saying it targets Iraq, its security and stability, and the region’s security and stability.

Khasawneh expressed Jordan’s full solidarity with the people and government of Iraq, as well as the national forces, which contribute to the political process under the constitution. The Kingdom also supports defeating all those who aim to push terrorism and extremist on Iraq and those who try to use it as a place ot settle scores and conflicts, he added. 

“This is a cowardice,” he said. “We fully support the Iraqi government and the national components that follow the political and constitutional process in Iraq.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi also phoned his Iraqi counterpart, Fouad Hussein, and underlined Jordan’s condemnation and denunciation of the assassination attempt.

Jordan stands fully by Iraq in the face of all challenges, and against anything that targets its security, stability, achievements, and the safety of its people and leadership, Safadi underscored. He stressed that the security and stability of Iraq is a cornerstone of the security and stability of the region.

Prior to the phone call, Safadi tweeted on his official account: “We condemn in the strongest terms the attempt to assassinate Al-Kadhemi and denounce it as a heinous terrorist crime and cowardly aggression against Iraq and its stability.”

The US State Department’s spokesperson Ned Price issued a statement condemning the “apparent act of terror” which he said “was directed at the heart of the Iraqi state.”
