AMMAN — Successful students in the General Secondary Certificate exam, Tawjihi, including both repeaters and regular students with high grades,
gathered in a demonstration on Thursday in front of the Parliament building.
The purpose of their protest was to advocate for an increase in the available
medical seats in public universities. They also aimed to voice their opposition
to the recent decision by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to reduce the number of seats by a staggering 70 percent.
The students stated that their protest was
strategically timed to align with a meeting between the parliamentary education
and youth committee and the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Their objective was to effectively communicate their demands to the
committee members, exerting pressure on the ministry to rectify the perceived
injustices, address their concerns, and ultimately respond positively to their
appeals, Jo24 reported.
They further pointed out that such a
reduction would invariably rob them of the opportunity to secure coveted
positions in medical studies. This concern was especially pronounced among
those students who had previously repeated their academic years.
