The decision exempts students in grades one through six, children of Jordanian mothers married to non-Jordanians, residents from the Gaza Strip, and students registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Non-registered students with refugee status may benefit from the reduced fees if they register with UNHCR.
The decision affects approximately 15,000 students and is expected to generate JD 9 million annually from the included students (around 30% below their actual educational cost). These funds will be directed to the Ministry of Education to improve public school education quality.
The total number of non-Jordanian students in public schools from various nationalities is estimated at around 48,000, with the annual cost of their education exceeding JD 38 million.
Under the new framework, actual educational costs for non-Jordanian students in public schools will be collected according to the rates set by the relevant committees within the Ministry of Education.
The Cabinet approved the principles for determining school fees for non-Jordanian students and decided to collect the actual cost of their education in public schools, based on the recommendation of the Minister of Education.
Under the amendment, the financial cost per semester for non-Jordanian students not included in the exempted categories will be JD 300 for all academic secondary education tracks, grades seven through ten, as well as vocational and technical education, while schooling remains free for Jordanian students.
