According to a statement issued by Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh on Thursday, the LCP will give a set of detailed sector-specific policy and technological recommendations to establish and implement a low-carbon pathway as part of Jordan's moves toward climate resilience.

He noted that renewable energy sources can decarbonize 90 percent of the electricity sector by 2050, significantly reducing carbon emissions and aiding in climate change mitigation.

"Jordan ranks high in the global use of solar energy with its advanced sustainable renewable energy systems and aims to become a regional center for the exchange of electric energy, primarily due to its strategic location," he said, adding that work is underway to improve the electricity network's infrastructure in order to develop regional electrical interconnection projects.

The minister highlighted efforts to improve energy efficiency in various sectors by 9 percent of average consumption in 2018, as outlined in the Energy Strategy for 2020-30.

"Until the end of July, the total capacity of installed renewable energy generation projects stood at 2,526 megawatts, a share of 29 percent compared to 26 percent in 2021, while energy generated from installed renewable energy capacity amounted to approximately 5.5 terawatt hours by the end of 2021," he added.

Kharabsheh hailed the EBRD’s efforts to support development in Jordan, particularly in the energy sector.

On Wednesday, Jordan approved the National Response Plan to Climate Change 2022 - 2025, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Jordan to contribute to the global effort to achieve climate stability.
