In statements to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), the senators said the King’s call for a unified Arab and Islamic position to protect Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif represents a Jordanian diplomatic initiative aimed at mobilizing international support in response to what they described as unlawful Israeli measures in the occupied city.

Omar Razzaz

Chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Arab, International and Expatriate Affairs, Dr. Omar Razzaz, said King Abdullah II’s meeting with members of the Arab Ministerial Committee tasked with advancing international efforts regarding Jerusalem reaffirmed Jordan’s longstanding commitment to defending the Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city.

Razzaz said the King stressed that confronting repeated Israeli actions requires an effective and unified Arab and Islamic response, particularly amid what he described as attempts to exploit regional crises through settlement expansion and land annexation. He added that the meeting was especially important in highlighting ongoing developments and reinforcing collective solidarity.

He emphasized that the King’s positions reflect Jordan’s enduring commitment to protecting Jerusalem and its holy sites and reaffirmed that the Hashemite Custodianship remains a symbol of Jordan’s historical responsibility toward the city and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Khawla Al-Armouti

Chair of the Senate’s Women Committee, Khawla Al-Armouti, said the Hashemite Custodianship represents a deeply rooted historical responsibility based on a longstanding commitment to preserving Jerusalem’s identity and safeguarding its Islamic and Christian holy sites.

She noted that King Abdullah II reaffirmed that the custodianship is both a historical and religious trust and a cornerstone of efforts to preserve the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif and Christian holy sites in the face of attempts to alter their historical and legal status.

Al-Armouti added that the King called for stronger Arab coordination to halt what she described as unprecedented and unlawful Israeli measures targeting the city’s historical and legal character. She stressed that Jordan, under King Abdullah II’s leadership, continues to fulfill its historic role in protecting Jerusalem through the Hashemite Custodianship, which she described as a safeguard for the city’s identity and religious significance.

Ali Al-Ayed

Rapporteur of the Senate’s Committee on Arab, International and Expatriate Affairs, Ali Al-Ayed, said the King’s appeal for a unified Arab and Islamic stance demonstrates Jordan’s efforts to rally international support against Israeli policies in Jerusalem.

He said the King reaffirmed Jordan’s continued historical and legal role in caring for the Islamic and Christian holy sites under the Hashemite Custodianship, while warning of the consequences of settlement expansion and changes to Jerusalem’s identity.

Al-Ayed also praised the outcomes of the ministerial meeting held in Amman, saying they reflected Jordan’s consistent position in favor of coordinated Arab, Islamic, and international action to protect Jerusalem and its holy sites.

Hail Obeidat

Rapporteur of the Senate’s Palestine Committee, Dr. Hail Obeidat, outlined the historical foundations of the Hashemite Custodianship, tracing its origins to 1917 and the pledge of allegiance to Sharif Hussein bin Ali, followed by the first Hashemite restoration project in 1924.

He noted that the custodianship has continued through successive Hashemite eras, including its recognition in the 1994 Jordan–Israel Peace Treaty and the 2013 agreement between King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Obeidat highlighted the role of the Hashemite Fund for the Restoration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock in preserving Jerusalem’s holy sites and said Jordan continues to defend the city’s historical and legal status in regional and international forums.

He concluded that the Hashemite Custodianship has become an internationally respected model for protecting religious heritage, describing it as not merely a historical legacy but an ongoing humanitarian and moral responsibility undertaken by King Abdullah II to preserve Jerusalem’s Arab identity and sacred character.
