Jordan inflation up 1.95% in January, water and meat see biggest surge

AMMAN – On Sunday, the Department of Statistics (DoS) reported that the inflation rate in Jordan increased by 1.95 percent during January 2024.

Comparing it to January 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a 1.95 percent rise, with a slight decrease of 0.08 percent compared to December 2023, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

As a result, the overall CPI for January 2024 reached 109.72, compared to 107.62 for January 2023. Additionally, the CPI for January 2024 was 109.72, compared to 109.82 for December 2023.

Regarding commodity groups, the following contributed to the overall inflation increase in January 2024 compared to January 2023:

  • Water and sanitation: 7.34 percent.
  • Personal luggage: 5.92 percent.
  • Vegetables and dried/canned legumes: 5.87 percent.
  • Union contributions: 5.86 percent.
  • Meat and poultry: 5.41 percent.

On the other hand, the following commodity groups contributed to

  • reducing the overall inflation increase:
  • Fuel and lighting: -1.74 percent.
  • Household textiles: -1.42 percent.
  • Culture and entertainment: -1.05 percent.
  • Clothing: -0.66 percent.
