As part of the procedural steps required to begin implementing the National Water Carrier project, the Cabinet has approved a decision by the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority granting the project a range of facilities and exemptions necessary for its launch.

The decision is aimed at streamlining the procedures needed to start work on the project, which is described as the first of its kind. The project is designed to desalinate 300 million cubic metres of seawater annually and pump it through pipelines stretching approximately 450 kilometres, with the goal of meeting around 40 percent of the Kingdom's drinking water needs and strengthening national water security.
The volume of water the project is expected to supply annually is estimated to be equivalent to the combined storage capacity of all the Kingdom's dams, and approximately three times the output of the Disi water project. Per capita annual water supply is projected to double from 60 to 110 cubic metres, while the number of days per week that water is available is expected to increase from one day to three days across all governorates.
