The head of the Water and Irrigation Committee in the Karak Governorate Council, Fathi Al-Huwaimel, told the Jordan News Agency, (Petra), that the agricultural sector in the Southern Jordan Valley plays an important role in the economic system and that the region is essentially Jordan's food basket.

He pointed out that the agricultural sector in the Southern Jordan Valley has witnessed many obstacles for years, including marketing and high production requirements and taxes, which has incurred costs and debts for farms, especially with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of these challenges, many of the district's farmers have been forced to leave agriculture and turn to other sectors.

A farmer, Hassan Al-Mashaleh, told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the agricultural sector in the Southern Jordan Valley has witnessed many losses for years, caused by to the lack of foreign markets for the export of agricultural products, which has led to the accumulation of debts for farmers.

Another farmer, Salah Al-Khalifat, called for intensifying supervision over the agricultural sector, as market brokers control prices, and this has caused a decrease in the prices of many agricultural products.

Al-Khalifat stressed the need to solve the problem of irrigation water scarcity in the district, and to control attacks on water sources.

The farmers appreciated the step of the Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Al-Hanafiat, to establish an integrated agricultural complex project in the district to manufacture agricultural products of all kinds, in addition to a packaging center and a marketing center to serve farmers and advance the agricultural sector.
