The Ministry of Agriculture announced that, in the coming days, it will determine the value of the subsidy to be paid per ton of tomatoes delivered to local factories, along with the payment mechanism. This will be done in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure the intended impact is achieved with the highest levels of transparency and fairness.

In a statement released Thursday, the Ministry clarified that this subsidy will be disbursed directly to encourage factories to purchase greater quantities of local tomato produce.
The Ministry explained that this step comes in response to seasonal challenges faced by tomato farmers, particularly during periods of overproduction that lead to falling prices and significant financial losses for farmers.
It emphasized that supporting local tomato processing will help absorb surplus production and provide farmers with a sustainable marketing outlet, positively impacting income stability and the continuity of tomato farming.
The Ministry also noted that this decision aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen national food security, which has become a regional model due to its integrated policies that support production, improve value chains, and promote local food processing.
It is worth noting that the Cabinet, in its session held Wednesday and chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Jaafar Hassan, approved the allocation of subsidies by the Ministry of Agriculture for tomato paste production. The Minister of Agriculture was tasked with determining the amount to be paid per ton of tomatoes delivered to factories.
The decision is expected to encourage factories to purchase larger quantities of local produce and reduce losses for farmers, in line with the government’s national food security policies—considered among the most advanced in the region. (Petra)
