Researchers say potato byproducts, such as stems and leaves discarded after harvest, contain active compounds used in cosmetic formulations. Among the most notable is solanesol, which plays a key role in producing coenzyme Q10, along with vitamin K2.
Coenzyme Q10 is known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to maintain healthy, youthful skin, while vitamin K2 supports collagen and calcium metabolism.
Currently, cosmetic companies extract solanesol from tobacco plants, but demand for this compound has risen significantly over recent decades.
In this context, scientists working on a University of Aberdeen project are examining the feasibility of using potatoes as a local source of solanesol. If successful, moisturizers and facial masks could soon contain ingredients derived from potatoes.
The Grampian Growers Association—a farmer-owned cooperative based on Scotland’s east coast—described the project as “extremely important” for the potato industry. Professor Heather Wilson, head of the Immunology Department at the University of Aberdeen, said: “Exploring the quality and yield of solanesol extracted from local potato peels and assessing its applications in the cosmetics industry is an exciting and impactful area of research.”
Potatoes and Skincare
Studies have shown that potato peel extract boosts collagen production—the protein responsible for skin elasticity and wrinkle reduction. Potatoes are also commonly used at home to address issues such as hyperpigmentation, dark circles, and acne. Japanese sweet potatoes are said to soften wrinkles around the eyes when mashed and mixed with lemon juice.
Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene, which converts into vitamin A and protects the skin from UV rays, in addition to vitamins C and E, which enhance collagen production and give the skin a radiant, healthy glow.
