Many people suffer from osteoporosis as they age, putting them at risk of serious injuries such as fractures or even losing mobility.
According to the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers from Finland conducted a long-term study on bone health and prevention methods. They analyzed the health and dietary habits of over 14,000 women over a period of 25 years. One of the key findings was that long-term consumption of liquid dairy products—such as milk, yogurt, and cultured dairy drinks—was among the most effective ways to prevent age-related bone fractures.

The study revealed that women who regularly consumed liquid dairy products had a 26% lower risk of any type of fracture, and a 36% lower risk of osteoporotic fractures, compared to women who did not consume dairy at all. Interestingly, genetic factors did not significantly affect the overall fracture risk, though they were linked to a reduced risk of hip fractures.
The study also accounted for several variables including age, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), intake of vitamin D and calcium, and the use of medications that affect bone health.
The findings suggest that moderate consumption of dairy products can have a protective effect—especially for bones vulnerable to osteoporosis.
Many doctors and nutrition experts emphasize the importance of regular dairy consumption, as dairy is a rich source of calcium, vital for bone health. It also contains numerous essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that support overall well-being.
