Kenya: Moroccan Autonomy Plan Is the "Only Sustainable Solution" to the Sahara Issue

This stance was announced in a joint statement issued following a meeting on Monday in Rabat between Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

The joint statement emphasized that Kenya views the autonomy plan as the sole viable and lasting solution to the Sahara dispute and expressed its intention to collaborate with other nations sharing this vision to help implement the initiative.

In this context, Kenya commended the increasing international alignment and the diplomatic momentum led by King Mohammed VI in support of the Moroccan proposal, describing it as the only realistic, credible, and feasible solution to the longstanding conflict.

Both officials reiterated the exclusive role of the United Nations in overseeing the political process and renewed their support for UN Security Council resolutions on the matter.

The statement concluded by affirming that Morocco appreciates Kenya’s recognition of the Kingdom’s ongoing cooperation with the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in advancing the political process based on relevant Security Council resolutions.

It is worth noting that Morocco first proposed the autonomy initiative in April 2007 as a realistic and final political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. Since then, the proposal has garnered widespread international support, including backing from the United States, France, Spain, Germany, and several countries in Africa and Latin America. The international community has described Morocco’s initiative as “serious and credible,” and the only practical basis for a long-term resolution.
