The Greek side failed to hold on to their lead twice. Mauritanian-born Senegalese Abu Bakari Kouita and Stavros Pelios scored their goals in the 12th and 75th minutes.

Real Madrid equalised both times, through Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé in the 32nd and 78th minutes. Substitute Federico Valverde then scored the winner with a spectacular long-range strike in the 92nd minute.

The win lifted Real Madrid to 12 points from four matches, a perfect record so far. They sit second in the table on goal difference, behind Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning champions of the past two seasons.

AEK Athens remain on 3 points in 30th place out of 36 teams, after their third consecutive defeat.

In matchday five, to be played on 24 and 25 November, Real Madrid host Dutch side PSV Eindhoven at the Santiago Bernabéu, while AEK Athens travel to Italy to face Como.

Real Madrid began their league-phase campaign with two tight wins, 2-1 over Inter Milan at the Bernabéu and 4-3 over Roma after a thrilling comeback at the Stadio Olimpico, before easily beating Leipzig 4-1 in Spain.

AEK Athens opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Austria's LASK, but then lost two consecutive matches, 3-1 to Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk and 5-1 to Manchester City.
