The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Monday that it has mutually agreed to terminate the contract of Switzerland's Vladimir Petković as head coach of the national team, following Algeria's disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The 62-year-old coach, who is of Bosnian origin, took charge of the Desert Foxes in 2024, succeeding Djamel Belmadi. His departure comes just two months after extending his contract through 2028.
In a statement, the Algerian federation said that its relationship with Petković and his coaching staff "officially ended today (Monday) by mutual consent."
Under Petković, Algeria reached the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in its history, after its previous appearance in 2014, benefiting from the tournament's expanded 48-team format.
However, Algeria's World Cup journey ended in the Round of 32 with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.
The Greens also fell short at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, exiting in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 loss to Nigeria.
The Algerian Football Federation did not announce who will replace Petković as head coach.
