Research suggests it can.
Concerns related to memory and dementia push many older adults to search for ways to exercise their brains and maintain cognitive function, whether through crossword puzzles or playing a musical instrument.
Learning languages might not, at first glance, seem like a similar kind of mental exercise, but it is in fact a complex activity that engages several mental processes at once.
Research increasingly suggests that language learning and bilingualism may offer cognitive benefits, including for older adults, alongside opening new opportunities for communication and social interaction.
A Comprehensive Brain Workout
The brain remains capable of change throughout a person's life, and this ability to adapt in response to experience is known as neuroplasticity.
Learning new sounds, vocabulary, and grammatical patterns requires the brain to form new connections and strengthen existing ones.
Learning a language also engages several mental processes at once, as the learner must absorb and retrieve information, pay attention to mistakes, then adjust their response as needed.
For this reason, language learning represents a rich form of ongoing cognitive exercise.
Studies on bilingualism have shown differences in both the brain's gray matter, which contains neurons and their connections, and white matter, which is largely made up of nerve fibers connecting different brain regions.
Some studies have pointed to higher gray matter density or improved white matter integrity in people who speak two languages compared to those who speak only one.
These findings suggest that the experience of using languages may be reflected not only in brain activity, but also in its structure.
What Happens to the Brain with Age?

Among the most important of these studies is a 2022 review titled "Bilingualism and Aging: Implications for (Delaying) Neurocognitive Decline," which discussed the relationship between bilingualism and cognitive reserve and the delayed onset of some dementia symptoms; and a systematic review titled "Does Second Language Learning Promote Neuroplasticity in Aging?" which examined findings from cognitive studies and brain imaging in older adults.
There is also the study "The Effect of Bilingualism on Brain Development from Early Childhood to Young Adulthood," which examined changes in gray and white matter in the brain.
Among the most recent of this research is a 2026 study titled "Baseline Cognitive Status and Engagement Are Associated with Cognitive Change Following Language Learning in Older Adults," which tested the effect of learning a new language on cognitive abilities in older adults, as well as a reference scientific paper titled "Defining and Investigating Cognitive Reserve, Brain Reserve, and Brain Maintenance," which addressed the concept of resilience and cognitive reserve in the face of aging and neurological diseases.
Learning a New Language Later in Life
This raises an important question: if lifelong bilingualism may help the brain with age, can similar benefits be achieved by learning a new language later in life?
The way people learn languages changes with age, but adults remain capable of learning new languages throughout their lives.
Children and adults have different advantages in the learning process; children are often better at pronunciation and certain aspects of grammar, while adults have a larger vocabulary stock and more developed learning strategies.
Research involving older adults suggests that learning a new language may yield cognitive benefits, though results still vary between studies.

Therefore, what may matter isn't reaching some magic number of training hours, but rather continuing a difficult and stimulating mental activity like learning a new language.

Learning a new language is not a magic cure for aging, and it cannot guarantee protection against Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.
But it does represent a rich and complex form of mental activity.
It may be better to view language learning not as a means of keeping the brain "young," but as a way to support cognitive flexibility, meaning a person's ability to keep learning, adapting, and maintaining their functions despite age-related changes.
Aging inevitably changes the brain, but a person retains the ability to learn throughout their life.
Keeping the brain engaged with new and challenging activities, such as learning another language, may help strengthen this capacity for adaptation and resilience.
