"Industry" Ministry Issues 2,700 Violations Since Start of the Year
Amman – Since the beginning of this year until mid-August, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply has issued 2,700 violations in markets across the Kingdom, the majority of which (approximately 83%) were due to the failure to display prices, according to the ministry's official spokesperson, Yanal Barmawi.اضافة اعلان

In response to inquiries by Al-Ghad, Barmawi stated that the market violations recorded included failure to display prices, overpricing, lack of essential goods, and violations related to discounts and promotions.

Barmawi elaborated that the ministry issued:

2,251 violations for not displaying prices,

331 violations for exceeding the set or advertised price,

79 violations for the unavailability of large-sized bread,

with the remaining violations relating to non-compliance with discount and promotional regulations.

Geographical Distribution of Violations

Barmawi noted the distribution of the violations across governorates as follows:

1,395 in the capital, Amman,

385 in Zarqa,

256 in Irbid,

126 in Aqaba,

534 across the remaining governorates.

Monitoring and Compliance

He emphasized that inspection teams operate according to a fixed schedule ensuring round-the-clock monitoring across all governorates to verify the availability of goods and that prices remain balanced.

Barmawi highlighted that there is significant compliance from the commercial sector with regulations. He clarified that the ministry's regulatory role is more educational than punitive, focusing on raising awareness about the importance of abiding by market regulations and ensuring the continuous availability of goods.

The ministry also monitors daily changes in local commodity prices and global market trends. It possesses the legal tools to control local market prices in accordance with national legislation, including the Industry and Trade Law, Consumer Protection Law, and anti-price gouging regulations.

Barmawi stated that the local market enjoys a wide availability of all essential goods, with various options and competitive pricing. The ministry maintains continuous communication with the private sector to ensure goods remain available at fair prices.

Oversight by the Directorate of Market and Supply Monitoring

The Directorate of Market and Supply Monitoring at the ministry is responsible for enforcing the Industry and Trade Law No. 18 of 1998, which includes:

Monitoring the availability and pricing of essential goods,

Ensuring the display and compliance with prices,

Checking wholesale inventory,

Detecting any withholding or refusal to sell essential goods,

And supervising discounts, clearances, and promotional prizes.
