In a press statement responding to a question about whether the leaders addressed the military bases, Lavrov said, “Everything was discussed.”

Earlier, Lavrov had noted that Syria is interested in maintaining the Russian bases in Tartus and Khmeimim, which could be converted into logistical centers to provide humanitarian support.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had also indicated that the issue of Russian military bases in Syria would be raised in one form or another during the talks between Putin and Al-Shar.

At the start of the meeting, the Syrian president emphasized the deep historical ties between the two countries, noting that Syria seeks to rebuild its political and strategic relations with regional and global states, with Russia being a top priority.

Al-Shar added that Damascus respects “all previous agreements” and is trying to redefine the nature of these relations in a way that preserves Syrian independence and national sovereignty.
