BRUSSELS — The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on "extremist" settlers in the West Bank, following US President Joe Biden's executive order issued last week against Israelis implicated in violence against Palestinians.اضافة اعلان

According to a foreign diplomat, the EU is "examining a host of steps against extremist settlers who have assaulted Palestinians, but the basic decision should be taken by the European Union and not by every member state separately." This decision is predicated on a unanimous agreement by the foreign ministers of the EU, Haaretz reported on Sunday.

Countries including France, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Malta, and Spain have already expressed their support for imposing sanctions, it is unclear whether countries that have sided with Israel since the war broke out, including Austria, the Czech Republic and Hungary would support such a move. The diplomatic source said last week's decision by the US administration would speed up a decision by the EU. These sanctions are likely to include a prohibition on entering EU countries and the freezing of assets held by people involved in violence against Palestinians.

The West Bank had already seen its highest levels of unrest in decades during the 18 months before Hamas' October 7 attack, and confrontations there have risen sharply since Israeli forces launched their retaliatory offensive on Gaza.
