The United Nations warned on Tuesday that the powerful earthquake which struck eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 900 people, could affect “hundreds of thousands” of individuals, cautioning that the death toll is expected to rise significantly.

“We believe the number of people affected could reach into the hundreds of thousands,” said Indrika Ratwatte, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, adding, “There is no doubt that the casualty figures will be enormous.”
Local officials and the U.S. Geological Survey reported Sunday evening that the quake’s epicenter, at a relatively shallow depth of eight kilometers, was located 27 kilometers east of Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province, bordering Kunar Province, where the largest number of casualties has so far been recorded.
