Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority announced Wednesday that the death toll from devastating floods that struck a border area with China has risen to at least 1,114, with 3,916 people missing.

On the Chinese side, state media reported that 16 people were killed in Tibet and another 546 were missing, bringing the overall toll from the disaster that began on August 26 to 1,130 dead and 4,462 missing, according to Agence France-Presse.
Authorities said Wednesday that hopes of finding more survivors among the thousands still missing in Nepal are fading, a week after an avalanche in the Himalayas triggered floods that devastated the mountainous country.
Around 4,000 people remain missing, while officials fear that many may be buried beneath debris left by floods that swept through towns and valleys near the Chinese border.
“Hope of finding survivors is fading. We pray and hope. Hope is hope!” said Fanindra Paudel, a senior official at the government’s National Emergency Operations Center.
Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet said rescue teams were searching for survivors believed to be trapped inside tunnels at several hydropower stations, whose facilities include rooms and spaces for people to stay.
Authorities said 279 people have been rescued from the debris of hydropower projects, while at least 639 others remain missing, with some believed to be trapped inside the tunnels.
