According to a statement from the Ottawa Police, the victim was attacked by an unidentified individual while shopping with a friend in a store known for its large section of Jewish foods. She sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment but was released the same day.

The 71-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and charged on Thursday with “aggravated assault.” Police stated on Friday that, following a “thorough investigation,” the incident was classified as a hate crime.

Following the announcement, Carney condemned the attack on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as “extremely troubling,” and addressed the Jewish community: “You are not alone (…) We condemn hatred and threats to your safety, and we will fight anti-Semitism wherever it appears.”

Meanwhile, Conservative Party opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called on the prime minister to strengthen “laws related to hate crimes” and to expel “non-Canadians who come here to spread hatred.”

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, noting that the attack “caused significant distress within the local Jewish community,” said security measures would be enhanced by increasing police patrols in specific areas. – (AFP)
