Barrack underscored that effective leadership, which adopts policies to promote stability in Iraq, is fundamental to achieving shared goals between the two nations. He also noted that he discussed with the Iraqi Prime Minister objectives for building a future aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
Tom Barrack recently assumed the Iraqi file from Mark Savaya, as confirmed by Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein earlier in February.
The Standoff Over Al-Maliki
Minister Hussein stated that the "Coordination Framework" continues to insist on nominating al-Maliki for the premiership. However, he noted that the American stance toward the former Prime Minister has created a new political landscape, adding: "It is unclear whether Washington’s vision regarding al-Maliki is temporary or permanent."
A few days ago, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed receiving a message from the United States suggesting the possibility of imposing sanctions on certain individuals and institutions if the insistence on appointing al-Maliki continues.
President Trump has previously hinted at suspending U.S. aid to Baghdad if al-Maliki remains the choice for the prime minister’s office.
