After midnight Saturday-Sunday, the Syrian army announced its control over the strategic city of Tabqa and the nearby Euphrates Dam in northern Syria, marking a new step in its advance against Kurdish forces, who had exercised self-administration in the region for over ten years.
Earlier, the Syrian army confirmed in a statement that it had captured Tabqa military airport just hours after entering the strategic city near one of the country’s largest dams and hydropower facilities. Tabqa serves as a transportation hub linking Aleppo to eastern Syria and is adjacent to the airport, now a strategic military base.
On Saturday morning, the army also announced it had taken control of large areas in eastern Aleppo countryside following the Kurdish forces’ agreement to withdraw. The army threatened to strike Raqqa, where the autonomous administration had imposed a curfew.
The Syrian state news agency (SANA) quoted Minister of Information Hamza Mustafa as saying:
"The Syrian army controls the strategic city of Tabqa in Raqqa countryside, including the Euphrates Dam, the largest dam in Syria."
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurds, stated that they had taken necessary measures to restore security and stability to the area, located about 40 kilometers from Raqqa.
