Families of Israeli hostages accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing genocide in Gaza—of sacrificing the hostages to remain in power.
They added that Netanyahu’s government is waging a war in Gaza without clear objectives and has opted for a military operation that will ultimately lead to the death of their loved ones.
Einav Zangauker, the mother of an Israeli hostage in Gaza, said that Netanyahu is placing obstacles in the way of a deal, urging Israelis to take to the streets in protest.
The demonstrations and calls for escalation come amid growing pressure from hostage families to move forward with an agreement that would ensure their relatives’ release.
Earlier this week, the families of hostages had called for intensified protests and mobilization to pressure Netanyahu’s government into concluding a prisoner-exchange deal and ending the war that has now continued for 22 months.
Israel estimates that Hamas is holding 50 hostages, 20 of whom are alive, while Tel Aviv detains more than 10,800 Palestinians in its prisons, amid rights group accusations of torture and medical neglect.
With U.S. backing, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, involving mass killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement—ignoring international appeals and International Court of Justice orders to halt it.
The genocide has left 62,744 Palestinians killed, 158,259 injured—most of them women and children—over 9,000 missing, hundreds of thousands displaced, and famine that has killed 300 Palestinians, including 117 children.
