Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabkian Shaheen said Tuesday that the UN Security Council’s adoption of a resolution supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza is the first essential step on a long road toward peace.

On Monday, the Security Council adopted the resolution drafted by the United States, which also authorizes the deployment of a multinational security force in Gaza and imposes an international mandate mechanism over the war-ravaged enclave following two years of conflict.
Speaking to reporters in Manila during her visit to the Philippines, the minister added, “The UN resolution is the first step on a long road toward peace. This step was necessary because we could not begin anything else before having a ceasefire.”
She noted that several issues still need to be addressed, including the Palestinian right to self-determination and the eventual establishment of an independent Palestinian state, stressing that the implementation of Trump’s plan must be governed by international law.
The Palestinian Authority, headquartered in Ramallah, welcomed the vote earlier and said it is ready to participate in Trump’s plan, which does not clearly define its role and vaguely refers to the establishment of a Palestinian state.
European and Arab countries maintain that the Palestinian Authority should govern Gaza and that there must be a clear path for Palestinians to achieve independence.
The Israeli government, which opposes the idea of an independent Palestinian state, rejects any role for the Palestinian Authority in governing Gaza.
