The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has informed Congress that it intends to move forward with plans to reopen the United States Embassy in Damascus, which was closed in 2012.

According to a notice sent earlier this month to congressional committees, a copy of which was obtained by Associated Press, the State Department notified lawmakers of its “intent to implement a phased approach to resuming embassy operations in Syria.”
The notice, dated February 10, stated that funding for reopening plans would begin within 15 days—next week—without specifying a timeline for completing the process or for the full return of American personnel to Damascus.
The administration has been exploring reopening the embassy since last year, and the issue has been a priority for the U.S. envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack.
Trump told reporters on Friday that President Ahmed al-Sharaa is doing “a great job,” adding that Syria is “beginning to stabilize and come together very well.”
In May of last year, Barrack visited Damascus and raised the U.S. flag at the American ambassador’s residence, in the presence of Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad al-Shibani.
