Senior officials convened the 14th meeting of Lebanon’s Military Technical Committee, known as the “Mechanism,” in Naqoura to evaluate ongoing efforts aimed at reaching a permanent arrangement to halt hostilities in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese News Agency.
The Lebanese presidency appointed Ambassador Simon Karam to lead the Lebanese delegation to the “Mechanism.”
Israel confirmed that these direct talks are the first of their kind in decades between Israeli and Lebanese officials, conducted under the framework of monitoring the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah reached last year.
Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Badrisian told reporters that “today’s meeting in Lebanon is an initial attempt to lay the foundation for economic relations and cooperation between Israel and Lebanon.”
She added, “There is no doubt that this direct meeting between Israel and Lebanon was made possible through the efforts of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reshape the face of the Middle East.”
