In a post on X, Abdelatty said he stressed during the call the importance of de-escalation, prioritizing negotiations, and respecting the security of the Gulf.
Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities on February 28. Iran responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, as well as US bases and assets in the region, while also tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The warring parties reached a ceasefire on April 8. On June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war in the region across all fronts.
Under the memorandum, the two countries were expected to hold negotiations over a 60-day period ending on August 17 to reach a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief. However, they failed to make sufficient progress toward an agreement amid continuing tensions.
