Daniel Dunker, Walmart’s Executive Vice President for AI, Products, and Design, stated in an interview that users will be able to shop directly from Walmart’s catalog via ChatGPT by clicking a “Buy” button. The catalog includes clothing, entertainment, packaged foods, and other products from both Walmart and its subsidiary Sam’s Club.

Dunker, who joined Walmart this year from Instacart to accelerate AI adoption, said, “We see this as an opportunity to provide a convenient experience that meets customer needs wherever they are.”

Feature Launch in Fall

The new service will not include fresh groceries, partly because consumers purchase similar items weekly. The feature is scheduled to launch in the fall.

Existing Walmart or Sam’s Club customer accounts will be automatically linked to ChatGPT, and products from third-party sellers will also be available.

As people increasingly use AI for daily tasks—from writing emails to searching for recipes—shopping is emerging as a key application, allowing users to compare deals and read aggregated product reviews. Meanwhile, retailers are testing AI tools to answer customer inquiries in real time and help them find what they need.

Extensive AI Integration at Walmart

OpenAI also has agreements with Etsy and Shopify, enabling ChatGPT users to purchase products from their platforms. Walmart is already heavily using AI across operations, providing tools for employees, suppliers, and consumers. Staff currently use AI for inventory ordering, scheduling, and other tasks, which speeds up processes such as fashion item production.

The ChatGPT deal further deepens Walmart’s partnership with OpenAI. The companies are also developing a certification program to train employees on better integrating AI into their roles, according to Bloomberg.
