The study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, followed about 355,000 adults for nearly 13 years.
The results showed that those who drank 5 cups of coffee a day were 50 percent less likely to develop liver cancer, and their risk of cirrhosis was reduced by about a third compared to non-coffee drinkers, according to Sky News Arabia, according to the British newspaper "Daily Mail".
It also showed that the benefits extended to decaffeinated coffee, even in people who added sugar or sweeteners to it.
The researchers pointed out that coffee may contribute to improving liver health thanks to its presence in compounds and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and fibrosis, while emphasizing that moderate consumption remains the best option.
On the other hand, the NHS recommends not exceeding 4 cups a day, as too much caffeine can lead to high blood pressure.
