A recent study has highlighted a possible association between these medications and an increased risk of alopecia (hair loss), prompting researchers to call for further studies to better understand the underlying causes.

New Study Links Weight-Loss Drugs to a Higher Risk of Hair Loss

The study analyzed data from nearly 50,000 people, comparing patients with type 2 diabetes who were taking GLP-1 receptor agonists with patients using other types of diabetes medications.

The researchers aimed to determine whether GLP-1 drugs were associated with a higher rate of alopecia or hair loss than other treatments while accounting for factors such as age and body weight to minimize their influence on the results.

What Are GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medications?

GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a naturally occurring hormone in the body that helps:

Regulate blood sugar levels

Reduce appetite

Slow stomach emptying

Increase feelings of fullness for longer periods

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Study Findings on Alopecia Risk

The researchers compared users of GLP-1 medications with patients taking SGLT-2 inhibitors and DPP-4 inhibitors.

The findings showed:
A 37% higher risk of alopecia among GLP-1 users compared with people taking SGLT-2 inhibitors.

A 68% higher risk of hair loss compared with patients using DPP-4 inhibitors.

The researchers emphasized that these findings indicate an association that deserves further investigation but do not prove that the medications directly cause hair loss.

Increasing Reports of Hair Loss with Mounjaro and Ozempic

The study's findings are consistent with an increasing number of reports submitted to health regulators.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) received around 400 reports related to hair loss among users of tirzepatide (Mounjaro) during 2026, in addition to more than 500 reports the previous year.

The agency also received dozens of reports involving semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy.

Meanwhile, regulatory authorities including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continue reviewing available data to determine whether these cases are linked to the medications.

Why Might Weight-Loss Drugs Cause Hair Loss?

Researchers believe the most likely explanation is not the medication itself, but rather the physical changes that accompany rapid weight loss and reduced calorie intake.

Possible contributing factors include:

Deficiencies in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and biotin.

Physiological stress caused by rapid weight loss.

Disruption of the normal hair growth cycle.

Hormonal or metabolic changes that may affect hair follicles.

Researchers stressed that these remain hypotheses and require additional research for confirmation.

Although hair loss is usually not a serious medical condition, it can have a significant emotional impact.
