According to a report on the science news site ScienceAlert, researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan conducted an experiment involving 14 amateur e-sports players. Participants were asked to play a virtual football game for three consecutive hours on two separate occasions. In the first session, they drank still water, while in the second, they consumed sparkling water.
The research team measured several indicators, including:
Reaction time.
Pupil size (as a physiological marker of fatigue).
Physical exertion levels.
Self-reported feelings of exhaustion.
Key Findings
The results showed that sparkling water helped diminish feelings of fatigue compared to still water. Furthermore, researchers observed that players who consumed carbonated water maintained higher levels of attention, reported greater enjoyment while playing, and committed fewer in-game errors.
In contrast, no significant differences were recorded in heart rate, blood sugar levels, or the "stress hormone" (cortisol) between the two groups.
Why does sparkling water help?
Researchers suggest the secret may lie in the carbon dioxide found in sparkling water. This gas may activate sensory receptors in the mouth known as TRP channels, which are linked to brain stimulation and increased alertness.
While the study did not directly test this specific biological mechanism, the results point to a potential mild stimulatory effect of sparkling water on the brain.
Many gamers and long-hour workers typically rely on coffee or energy drinks to stay awake. However, excessive caffeine consumption is often linked to health issues such as sleep disturbances, increased heart rate, and anxiety. Consequently, researchers believe sparkling water could represent a healthy alternative that boosts focus without these adverse side effects.
Need for Further Research
Despite the positive outlook, scientists noted that the study was relatively small and did not directly compare sparkling water to coffee or energy drinks. Additionally, part of the funding came from a sparkling water manufacturer, though the researchers emphasized that the funders had no influence over the study’s design or data analysis.
The team concludes that larger-scale studies are necessary to understand the impact of carbonated water on focus across diverse demographics beyond e-sports players.
