The UK National Health Service (NHS) has warned that a seemingly mild symptom could, in fact, be an early sign of a serious form of cancer.
According to the NHS, a cough lasting longer than three weeks may be an early indication of lung cancer—the deadliest cancer in the United Kingdom, claiming the lives of more than 33,000 people each year.

The warning was issued as part of the Lung Cancer Awareness Campaign, with the NHS posting on its official X (formerly Twitter) account:
“A cough that lasts more than three weeks could be a possible sign of lung cancer.”
However, the agency clarified—according to the Mirror newspaper—that a persistent cough does not always mean cancer, as it can also result from common colds, COVID-19, or allergies. Still, it emphasized the importance of seeing a doctor for proper evaluation through breathing tests, X-rays, and lab analyses to determine the cause accurately.
The NHS stressed that early diagnosis of lung cancer can save many lives, urging people to pay attention to any long-lasting symptoms and not to ignore them.
Doctors also noted that chronic symptoms such as fatigue, night sweats, shortness of breath, and persistent muscle pain may also signal cancer.
They further warned that symptoms lasting more than three weeks without an obvious cause—including chronic diarrhea, constipation, or blood in the stool—could indicate serious illnesses that require immediate medical evaluation. — Lenta.ru
