These habits include:
Sleeping 7 to 9 hours per night.
Exercising regularly.
Following a balanced diet.
Completely avoiding smoking.
Limiting alcohol consumption.
The study found that following just one healthy habit reduces the likelihood of constipation by about 20%, while adhering to four habits together lowers the risk by nearly half.
Researchers from the Chinese University in Hong Kong conducted the study on over 107,000 participants from the UK Biobank database, aged 40 to 70, who were followed for 12 years. During this period, 3,591 new cases of constipation were recorded.
The analysis highlighted that not smoking significantly lowered the risk by 17%, while adequate sleep reduced the likelihood by over 20%.
Scientists note that chronic constipation, affecting about 15% of the global population, is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer due to toxin retention in the digestive tract. Experts advise consulting a doctor if concerning symptoms appear, such as persistent bloating, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or chronic abdominal pain.
