French media outlets reported that Italian star Claudia Cardinale passed away at the age of 87, after a prolific career in cinema and theater. Cardinale was born in Tunisia to a Sicilian family and entered the film world in 1957 after winning a beauty contest in Tunisia, which earned her a trip to the Venice Film Festival.

Following a series of minor roles, she rose to international fame in 1963 when she appeared in Federico Fellini’s film 8½ and starred alongside Burt Lancaster in The Leopard the same year.
Her growing fame enabled her to break into Hollywood, appearing in the comedy The Pink Panther directed by Blake Edwards, and in Sergio Leone’s 1968 western Once Upon a Time in the West.
Cardinale’s career faced challenges in the 1970s after her separation from film producer Franco Cristaldi. She later began a lifelong relationship with director Pasquale Squitieri, with whom she had a daughter, also named Claudia.
Renowned for her husky voice and strong, independent spirit, Cardinale gained a reputation as a fiercely independent and free-spirited woman. She once famously defied Vatican protocol by attending a meeting with Pope Paul VI wearing a short skirt. In 2022, a book celebrating her life, titled Claudia Cardinale, Invincible, was published.
Cardinale spent most of her time in France and was a friend of Presidents François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac. She later turned to theater in the early 21st century, earning acclaim for her stage performances.
She continued acting in films in various European languages until late in her life. In 2002, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, calling acting a “great profession.”
