The MoU signing ceremony was held at the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan’s headquarters in Amman. Attendees included Greater Jerash Municipal Committee Chairman Mohammad Bani Yassin and the assigned project team, which included representatives of the municipal council committee: Deputy Committee Chair Engineer Baraa Tlailan, council member Alia Rawashdeh, and municipal department directors and section heads.
Bani Yassin stressed the importance of this partnership in strengthening the road safety system in Jerash. He noted that protecting children and students and providing a safe environment for their journeys to and from school are priorities that require coordinated efforts among municipal, national and international institutions.
He added that the municipality is committed to developing infrastructure and improving roads and areas surrounding schools in line with public safety requirements. He also emphasized the importance of drawing on technical expertise and specialized methodologies to identify and address traffic risks, and of translating field studies and assessments into practical measures that help reduce accidents and improve road safety for all road users, particularly children.
Municipal committee member Alia Rawashdeh coordinated the partnership, reflecting the committee’s commitment to making Jerash’s streets and school surroundings safer for children and caregivers.
The project aims to provide a safer environment for children travelling to and from school by assessing traffic risks and implementing engineering interventions, including:
1. Improving pedestrian crossings
2. Installing traffic signs and road markings
3. Introducing speed-calming measures
The project will also provide a number of municipal employees with opportunities to receive training and participate in field assessments, with the aim of qualifying them as licensed assessors. This will strengthen the municipality’s capacity to continue this work in the future.
