Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh affirmed on Tuesday that Jordan has been, and remains, among the pioneering countries in energy transition and increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation, stressing that promoting sustainability and green transition represent a national priority for achieving a more resilient and sustainable economy and strengthening energy security.

This came during Kharabsheh's participation in a session titled "Sustainability in Jordan: A National Necessity, Not an Option," as part of the Green Finance Forum 2026 organized by the Association of Banks in Jordan under the theme "Green Dialogue Between the Public and Private Sectors: A Strategic Tool for Framing Sustainability."
Kharabsheh said the green transition helps strengthen the resilience of the national economy, noting that the Economic Modernization Vision forms a strategic framework for supporting the transition path and achieving sustainable development, through developing economic sectors, improving their efficiency, and strengthening their ability to face future challenges.
He explained that the world is undergoing a gradual shift away from fossil fuels toward natural gas use and expanded reliance on renewable energy, noting that green hydrogen represents the fuel of the future.
He pointed out that Jordan is among the pioneering countries in this field, noting that the Kingdom has begun delivering natural gas from the Rishah gas field to most cities and industrial clusters, alongside signing a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding related to green hydrogen production.
In this context, Kharabsheh affirmed that the government has worked on amending several pieces of legislation supporting the energy transition path, explaining that a tax and fee exemption for energy storage equipment was recently approved.
He added that the government handles energy issues within a comprehensive vision for economic sustainability, strengthening Jordan's ability to face the repercussions of global market price fluctuations and their effects on supply chains, productive sectors, trade, and economic growth.
The first session, moderated by Idamah Association Chairman Dr. Durayd Mahasneh, and featuring Kharabsheh alongside Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman, former minister and energy expert Dr. Ibrahim Saif, and Jordan Kuwait Bank CEO Haitham Al-Batikhi, discussed several themes related to sustainability as a national economic issue.
The session also addressed Jordan's resilience in achieving a just transition toward renewable energy and energy efficiency, the importance of sustainability in reducing exposure to external shocks and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, alongside the role of green transition in strengthening economic resilience.
The forum comes from the importance of strengthening institutional dialogue among the various parties concerned with green transition, including the government, the central bank, the banking sector, the private sector, international financial institutions, and development partners, with the aim of unifying visions, coordinating policies, defining national priorities, and turning environmental goals into fundable and investable projects.
The forum aims to produce a shared national vision and practical recommendations that contribute to developing Jordan's green finance ecosystem, enhancing the readiness of green projects for financing and investment, and establishing dialogue between the public and private sectors as one of the key enablers for achieving a more sustainable, resilient economic transition capable of facing future challenges.
