AMMAN — The head of the Syndicate of
Owners of Clearance and Cargo Transport Companies Daifallah Abu Aqoula has said
that transit and land freight traffic between Jordan and Syria has increased by
more than 1,000 percent, according to Hala News.
Abu Aqoula said that the high cost of sea freight
for Jordan and neighboring countries has increased transit traffic through the
Syrian Port of Latakia.
The syndicate
chief described the trade movement between Jordan and Syria and the exchange of
goods as “very low”, attributing this to the regulations set by Jordan and
Syria on the import and export of goods. Jordan prevents the import of many
goods from its northern neighbor, and Syria has similar policies in place on
Jordanian goods.
Trade activity at the Jordanian-Syrian Joint Free
Zone remain weak, he added.
Abu Aqoula called for a review of the fees imposed
on Jordanian and Syrian trucks, stressing that this would raise the amount of
land freight movement between the countries.
