European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič affirmed Monday that the European Union remains “ready” to swiftly reach a trade agreement with the United States, following recent talks in Washington.

Šefčovič praised the “good discussions” held with Howard Lutnick and Jamieson Greer, officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “We are in constant contact.”
This comes after President Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50% tariffs on EU imports starting June 1, expressing frustration over what he described as stalled negotiations.
However, Trump agreed Sunday to postpone the heavy tariffs until July 9, following a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Despite the delay, the EU remains subject to a 10% general tariff imposed by Washington last month on imports from nearly all countries, in addition to 25% tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum.
