The British government announced on Tuesday that it has removed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its list of banned terrorist organizations.
HTS, formerly affiliated with al-Qaeda, had been designated a terrorist organization by the UK in 2017.

In December of last year, the UK indicated it might review the ban, while the administration of former US President Donald Trump had already removed HTS from its list of foreign terrorist organizations in July.
Britain, along with other countries, welcomed the end of Bashar al-Assad’s rule, which marked one of the most significant turning points in the Middle East in decades.
The UK government stated in a press release that removing HTS from the banned list will allow closer cooperation with the new Syrian government.
