On Sunday, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal announced their recognition of Palestine, followed on Monday by Luxembourg, Belgium, Andorra, France, Malta, and Monaco. This brings the total number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine to 159 out of 193 UN member states, since the late President Yasser Arafat proclaimed the establishment of the State of Palestine from Algeria in 1988.

The wave of recognitions comes amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza carried out by Israel with U.S. support since October 7, 2023, which has left 65,344 dead and 166,795 wounded—most of them women and children—and caused famine that has claimed the lives of 442 Palestinians, including 147 children.
