The medical team in the Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Neonatal Units at the Surgery and Specialized Surgeries Department in Al-Bashir Hospitals successfully performed a specialized surgery on a premature infant born with a rare congenital esophageal malformation known as esophageal atresia without a tracheoesophageal fistula – Type I esophageal obstruction.

Dr. Ali Al-Shobaki, Pediatric Surgery Consultant and supervisor of the case, stated that the infant was admitted to the neonatal unit, and the first surgical procedure was performed just hours after birth to enable gastric feeding. This was followed by three esophageal elongation surgeries, culminating in a final operation that successfully reconnected the upper and lower portions of the esophagus.
The medical team involved in the surgery included Dr. Tasneem Jaabo, Pediatric Surgery Specialist; Dr. Khaled Shaaban, Neonatology Consultant; and Dr. Nasser Al-Aqrabawi, Pediatrician and Neonatal Intensive Care Fellow.
Dr. Shobaki explained that after approximately 100 days of careful monitoring and intensive care, the infant was discharged in good health, marking a medical achievement that reflects the high level of expertise and advanced capabilities in neonatal and pediatric surgery, diagnosis, and care at Al-Bashir Hospitals.
The medical team also praised the efforts of the nursing staff in the surgical neonatal units for their pivotal role in the successful treatment and stabilization of the child, highlighting their meticulous monitoring and high level of compassion throughout the treatment and continuous care.
Dr. Ali Al-Abdallat, Director General of Al-Bashir Hospitals, told the Jordanian Petra News Agency that the hospitals continuously strive to advance the quality of medical and surgical services. He noted that this progress is the result of ongoing medical education and training, as well as support from the Ministry of Health to develop the public healthcare sector, positively impacting the quality of services provided to patients.
He commended the medical and nursing staff involved in this specialized surgery, emphasizing that the success reflects the competence and skill of Al-Bashir Hospitals’ personnel in managing delicate and complex cases according to the highest medical standards.
Dr. Al-Abdallat added that Al-Bashir Hospitals have become an advanced training and educational center in the Kingdom and the region, thanks to their highly qualified staff and distinguished medical and surgical expertise across multiple specialties.
