The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority has begun work on the Dara area, extending a bypass road, enlarging the public plaza and adding parking, in an effort to separate vehicle and pedestrian movement around the tourist street.

The scheme connects the tourist street to the centre of Wadi Musa and adds green space and public facilities alongside commercial units.
Adnan Sawa'ir, chairman of the authority's board of commissioners, told the Jordan News Agency that infrastructure sits at the centre of the authority's work on regional competitiveness. The design takes account of Petra's environmental and touristic character, Sawa'ir said, and aims to align the road network, the urban setting and the services available to visitors and residents.
What is being built
The alternative road runs about 800 metres, with 71 shops beneath it, 37 of them completed in the first phase. Above the shops sits a 10-metre carriageway, with pedestrian walkways, seating areas and pavements.
The public plaza is being extended by a further 140 metres, after roughly 90 metres in the first phase, with landscaping and planting beds. A new junction will link the planned parking areas to both the tourist street and the alternative road.
Parking will be built on two levels for up to 70 vehicles, with six public toilets and two accessible toilets.
