A study conducted by Italian scientists has shown that bergamot, also known as aromatic lemon, may help combat fatty liver and metabolic disorders.

According to Nutrients magazine, researchers from the Magna Graecia University in Italy found that polyphenols extracted from bergamot fruit can help the liver manage excess fat. Experiments on mice with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) showed that polyphenol supplements derived from bergamot significantly reduced liver fat accumulation, as well as triglyceride and blood glucose levels.

In the study, mice were fed a high-calorie diet for 15 weeks to simulate a human diet rich in sugars and fats, while one group received the bergamot polyphenol supplement in their drinking water. Results showed that mice without the supplement developed pronounced fatty liver, with liver weight and fat content more than doubling, alongside increased blood triglycerides, glucose, and cholesterol. In contrast, mice receiving the supplement showed reduced liver weight, a significant decrease in total fat content and lipid droplet area in liver cells, and lower blood triglyceride and glucose levels.

Tissue analysis revealed that bergamot polyphenols not only inhibit fat production in the liver but also enhance autophagy – a cellular “clean-up” process that removes excess fat and damaged cellular structures.

The study’s authors emphasized that, while the findings are promising for preventing metabolic-associated fatty liver using dietary supplements, the results are limited to a single mouse strain, and clinical trials are needed before practical recommendations for humans can be made.
